Abstract Existing studies offer conflicting analyses of the effect economy on voter turnout; some suggest that a poor leads to lower turnout while other find opposite, or no significant effects. One reason for this ambiguity might be rooted in limited understanding how voters form attitudes about economic performance. Previous research implicitly presumes voters’ assessments are based solely information retrospective domestic economy. In contrast, study suggests compare their nation’s with economies nations. If has an turnout, relative will affect evaluations, and consequently decision turn out. Employing ‘relative economy’ variables measured by media-identified spatial reference points across elections countries from 29 democracies since 1980s, paper finds good appears have effect.
